The Digital Switchover
For 80 % of French households, television reception is still via the terrestrial hertzian signal. Digital television (TNT) will from the end of March 2005 offer numerous digital channels without changing the aerial although specific digital equipment is required.
Unlike analogue, with digital television there is no loss of quality between the emission and reception of the signal. Fianlly last October the first HD channels became available.
The law of the 1st August 2000 laid out the roll-out of this new technology.
The first part of the switch to digital, the phasing-out of analogue, came about on the 4th February in Colommiers (Seine-et-Marne) and 9 neighbouring communities. A timetable was then established for the rest of France. It is as follows:
2nd February 2010: Alsace 9th March 2010: Basse Normandie 18th May 2010: Pays de Loire 8June 2010: Bretagne 28th September 2010: Lorraine and Champagne-Ardenne 19th October 2010: Poitou-Charentes and Centre November 2010: Franche Comte et Bourgogne 7 December 2010: Nord 1st part 2011: Picardie and Haute Normandie, Ile de France and Aquitaine, Limousin, Auvergne 2nd part 2011: Cote d'Azur, Corse, Rhone, Provence, Alpes, Midi-Pyrénées | |
